Subject: Following my inspection today

Hi Mrs Frost

Following my inspection this morning I am responding to you in writing and would ask that you do the same due to the comment you made regarding taking legal action against Mr Carpet.

We installed carpets on the 5th and 6th of April to your Main bedroom, Study, Box bedroom and Lounge. You rang on the 7th April to inform me that you felt that the Lounge carpet was a different tone to the other carpets and asked me to come and have a look. As I was unable to come out that day I offered to send you a sample in the post as you had no waste material from the installation to compare against all of the fitted carpets to see if they matched the sample given that the Lounge is on a different floor to the other areas to which you agreed. I had also checked with the manufacturers the same afternoon to which they confirmed that the Lounge, Box bedroom and Study are all cut from the same roll. You then rang on Friday 8th to say that you had received the sample and that you still felt that there was an issue so we agreed for me to come and have a look on Saturday 9th April to inspect.

Upon my inspection I presented the colour swatch that you had chosen from to see if there was another similar tone but it was very clear that the carpet you chose is the same as the carpet fitted. I explained that in my opinion the carpet looks slightly lighter in the Lounge due to the fact that you have light coming in from both the front and the rear of the room flooding the room with light of which you do not have to the other rooms. I also stated that a synthetic carpet will reflect light which causes a slight sheen which could also contribute to the difference in appearance.

You mentioned that you had spoken to a professional that informed you that carpets can change in colour from 1 end of the roll to the other. This is true of piece dyed carpets but NOT of synthetic carpets. The Ullswater carpet that you have had fitted is polypropylene and is extruded/spun from plastic chips. It is all coloured in one batch and several tons of yarn are extruded in one go and several rolls possibly in excess of 10 are made at a time so where polypropylene carpets are concerned the variation within a roll just isn't possible.

I took pictures of the sample that I posted to you against the carpets to the Study, Box Bed and Lounge (see images attached) to which you can see that there is no difference in tone.

As mentioned I will ask that the manufacturers take a look at the attached images and ask their opinion. I will not ask them to inspect the carpet as I can not guarantee that they will be with you before next Friday as you requested.

I am sorry that we find ourselves in this situation as the last thing we want are dissatisfied customers however on this occasion I find the complaint unfounded.

Regards

Richard Clough
